Malaysian politicians are infamous for their verbal taunts during parliament sessions or assemblies.
Malacca's state assembly on May. 10 was no different.
Arguments erupted half an hour into assembly
Barely half an hour into the assembly, a verbal argument erupted betwen Sungai Udang assemblyman Idris Haron (Umno), State Legislative Assembly Speaker Omar Jaafar, and several Pakatan Harapan (PH) representatives, according to Kini TV.
Idris argued that Omar was not fit to be the assembly speaker as he does not command the majority support of the state assembly.
He added that Omar is aligned with PH and has direct interest in the decision, reported Malay Mail.
Whilst this altercation was ongoing, another verbal disagreement occurred in the background.
Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu-Independent) and Low Chee Leong (Kota Laksamana-DAP) exchanged words of their own, resulting in a barrage of swear words.
Norhizam and Low's verbal insults led to a viral video that made its rounds online:
"Babi", "barua" and "pengkhianat"
Low called Norhizamm a "barua" (pimp) and "pengkhianat" (traitor).
On the other hand, Norhizam repeatedly shouted at Low: "Babi, babi, babi, babi!"
"Babi" means pig in Malay.
Norhizam claimed he was provoked by Low
Norhizam has since claimed that he was provoked by Low and the opposition.
He told Astro Awani:
"The opposition called me names and I merely wanted to defend myself... I'm disappointed that the video made it look like I started the argument but I was just doing my own thing peacefully when they verbally insulted me."
Omar eventually adjourned the assembly sitting as the pandemonium was beyond control.
According to Free Malaysia Today, Melaka Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh has been appointed as the new state assembly speaker on May 11 following a vote at which no opposition members were present.
