German chancellor Angela Merkel was spotted queuing up at a local supermarket before she went into quarantine on Sunday, March 22.

She quarantined herself after being informed that a doctor who administered a vaccine to her has tested positive for Covid-19.

No panic buying

Merkel's shopping spree on Friday night, March 20, was reported by local media the next day, according to Gulf Today.

She had some toilet paper, a few bottles of what appears to be shampoo, and at least four bottles of wine in her cart.

She reportedly paid by card at the checkout.

Supermarket staff told dpa the chancellor is a regular visitor.

New social distancing rules

Merkel had announced a ban on public gatherings of more than two people shortly before she went into quarantine.

As of Sunday, March 22, Germany had nearly 24,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus with more than 90 deaths, according to tracking by Johns Hopkins University

The country has kept the death toll relatively low as compared to other European countries, such as Italy -- a phenomenon that some experts attribute to a higher testing rate.
