Workers’ Party (WP) MP Jamus Lim appeared as “Contractor Lim” in a video introducing a new “cool paint” initiative at a Sengkang estate that is said to reduce ambient temperatures by up to 2°C.

The rollout at Anchorvale Gardens comes amid Singapore’s recent stretch of hot weather, with the initiative expected to be expanded to 15 other precincts this year.

In the video posted on Facebook, Lim donned a neon-coloured safety vest and adopted a more colloquial Singlish-speaking persona while speaking in front of the residential blocks at Anchorvale Gardens.

According to Lim, research has shown that the paint can help lower temperatures by reflecting more sunlight and absorbing less heat.

“Not only does it lower the temperature, at the same time, save you money,” he added.

Lim also said the anti-algae and cool paint coating would first be rolled out at Anchorvale Gardens before being introduced to 15 other precincts in Sengkang, undergoing Repair and Redecoration (R&R) works this year.

In the caption accompanying the video, Lim said Singapore’s recent weather has been “punishingly hot”, adding that Singaporeans are not “uniquely tropically-evolved humans”, and that they “just know where the aircon is”.

He also said studies on cool paint technology have shown “rather promising results”, with some evidence pointing to reductions in ambient temperatures of up to 2°C.

The initiative is part of Sengkang Town Council’s scheduled R&R works.
