A 26-year-old man in Malaysia who had been working multiple jobs to save up for his wedding is now fighting for his life after he was allegedly hit by a suspected drunk driver travelling against traffic in Klang, Selangor.
According to SAYS, Zulfiqar Zamir Amirul Nizam had been riding his motorcycle at about 12:30am on May 13 when a car allegedly travelling against the flow of traffic crashed into him.
His mother, Hamidah Othman, said her son had done nothing wrong.
“My son was on the correct side of the road. He did nothing wrong. I want justice for my son,” she told the New Straits Times (NST).
“In fact, justice should not just be for him, but for everyone. I do not want this to happen to anyone else,” she added.
Was reportedly completing final delivery before heading home
According to NST, Hamidah said Zulfiqar worked full-time as a service adviser and only took up food and parcel delivery jobs in his spare time to earn extra income ahead of his wedding.
He was engaged and had planned to hold a wedding reception in Pasir Gudang this December, she explained further.
“He only did part-time food and parcel deliveries through the Lalamove platform during his free time, and only when he was not too exhausted from his day job,” she said.
“That night, he was trying to complete his final delivery to Bandar Puteri, Puchong, before heading home,” she added.
Driver allegedly travelled 3.5km against traffic
According to South Klang district police chief ACP Lim Jit Huey, the suspect had allegedly driven about 3.5km against the flow of traffic while intoxicated before crashing into Zulfiqar's motorcycle.
Police also alleged the driver had been speeding.
The crash left Zulfiqar with a fractured arm and a broken back.
He has since undergone surgery and remains in critical condition at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital's intensive care unit.
Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man has since been charged in connection with the incident.
According to SAYS, he was allegedly found to have 196mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, almost four times the legal limit of 50mg.
The man reportedly claimed trial to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing grievous injury.
The case is ongoing.
