A 27-year-old man in India admitted himself to a hospital's trauma intensive care unit (ICU) — with a sickle-shaped machete sticking out the left side of his head.

The man was allegedly attacked on the street, various media in India reported.

An object, which appeared to be a machete, was left embedded in his head.

The man was not only conscious, but was seen walking inside Mumbai's Sion Hospital, although he appeared to have been bleeding.

The footage of the man in hospital was taken on May 2 at around 10:30pm.

What happened

The man was allegedly ambushed by three teenagers near a fried chicken shop, following a previous altercation.

One of the youths allegedly stabbed the man in his head, while the other two punched and kicked him.

The victim remained conscious throughout the attack and was rushed to the hospital on a motorcycle by a friend.

Footage in hospital

Footage showed the man casually walking in the hospital.

Another person who walked past him almost bumped into the object's handle.

Missed vital areas

A doctor who attended to the bizarre case reportedly described the man's survival as "miraculous".

The blade had penetrated the man's skull and reached 3cm inside his head, but avoided damaging critical parts of his brain, which left his speech and motor functions intact.

The man has since undergone surgery and is out of danger.

The victim's family reportedly criticised the hospital for the long waiting time before treatment.

Police said the three suspects have been arrested.
