A handwritten note allegedly written by the late sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein has been made public by a US federal judge, years after it was kept under seal.

According to The New York Times (NYT) and Financial Times (FT), the document was released on Wednesday by Judge Kenneth M Karas after a petition to unseal court records.

The note has not been independently authenticated.

The note seemed to have made reference to Epstein’s federal sex trafficking investigation and his time in custody, beginning with: “They investigated me for months — FOUND NOTHING!!!”, reported FT.

It also includes the line: “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye”, along with brief remarks about his situation, before ending with “NO FUN” and “NOT WORTH IT!!”

Note found in jail cell, says former cellmate

Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, said he found the note in July 2019 inside a graphic novel in their shared cell after Epstein was removed following an apparent suicide attempt, according to the NYT.

Tartaglione said he gave the note to his lawyers because he believed it could have been useful if Epstein continued to claim that he had tried to harm him.

He had earlier been accused by Epstein of assault inside the jail cell, an allegation he has repeatedly denied.

Death ruled as a suicide, continued scrutiny

Epstein was found dead later that year at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in New York.

The city’s medical examiner ruled that he died by suicide, concluding that he hanged himself in his jail cell.

However, questions about the circumstances of his death have persisted in public discourse, fuelled in part by scrutiny over his connections to wealthy and powerful figures across the world.

According to the Financial Times, conspiracy theories have continued to circulate in recent years as details of Epstein’s global network of contacts have emerged.

The US Justice Department released thousands of pages of documents related to Epstein in late 2025, outlining ties to figures across the UK royal household, government circles, the Trump administration, and Wall Street.
