My priority was her safety: SBS staff helps elderly woman lying in middle of road in Jurong West
His first instinct was to help.
An elderly woman in "visible distress" lay across two lanes of the road outside Boon Lay Bus Interchange at around 3pm on Mar. 25.
As traffic behind the elderly woman was building up, Assistant Interchange Supervisor Wong Chee Chuon, 44, from SBS Transit, heard about the congestion and hurried outside.
He stepped onto the road and approached the elderly woman calmly.
In a Facebook post on Mar. 27, SBS Transit commended Wong for his quick thinking, patience and care.
Wong said: “When I saw her lying in the middle of the road, I didn’t think further— my priority was her safety.”
In a video posted to the Facebook page Singapore Incidents, a middle-aged man could be seen directing traffic away.
An onlooker could be heard saying: "Oh my god, is she alright?"
'My priority was her safety'
Wong told Lianhe Zaobao that the scene was chaotic.
After learning about the general situation from a bus conductor, he went to the middle of the road to assist the elderly woman.
Wong and a SMRT staff member lifted the woman to a grass patch by the roadside.
The woman repeatedly yelled at the men, telling them to ignore her. Wong, however, patiently responded, telling her they were there to help.
Wong told Zaobao that in his 12 years of service, he has often encountered people in need of help and that SBS Transit provides yearly training courses to deal with emergencies.
Elderly woman conveyed to hospital
In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that on Mar. 25, at about 3:50pm, they were alerted to a call for assistance along Jurong West Central 3.
The SCDF said that they conveyed one person to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
According to SBS Transit's Facebook post, Wong continued to stay by the elderly woman's side when paramedics arrived.
Although the elderly woman "became increasingly agitated and resisted help", Wong remained composed and patient.
