A man in his 40s in Hangzhou, China, was lighting fireworks during dinner on Chinese New Year eve when tragedy struck.

Man ruptured eyeball while lighting fireworks

The man, who had just become a new father less than six months ago, was rushed to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine after he injured his eyes, and was diagnosed with a ruptured eyeball, according to Sina.

The lens and choroid had been blown out of his eye, and a large piece of his cornea was missing, while his sclera was ruptured in multiple directions.

Most of the contents of his eyeball had also leaked out.

Doctors could barely find the retina and other posterior segment tissues, and suturing alone took more than five hours.

They also predicted that the man might need his eyeball removed.

"My child is only five months old. I just became a father. How will I face my daughter in the future?" the man was reported lamenting, according to Worldjournal.

12 patients with eye injuries on CNY eve alone, hospital reported

The hospital reported that it had received 12 patients with eye injuries tied to fireworks and firecrackers on CNY eve alone, four of which required surgery.

The new father who suffered a ruptured eyeball had been the most severe case of the night.

The Ophthalmology Centre at the hospital added that they have been seeing more than 10 patients injured by fireworks and firecrackers on CNY eve annually in recent years.
