Man, 51, from India, procured woman for prostitution in S'pore, gets 6 months' jail
She provided sexual services at least 18 times and handed over at least S$900 to the accused.
A 51-year-old man was sentenced to six months' jail for acting as a pimp for a woman he procured to work as a prostitute in Singapore
Alagiriraj Janakar, an Indian national, faced five charges of violating the Women's Charter.
He pleaded guilty to two of them, which were procuring a woman for the purpose of prostitution, as well as knowingly living on the earnings of the prostitution of another person.
The remaining charges were taken into consideration by the judge during sentencing.
Procured woman from India
Sometime in January 2025, the accused’s friend, a person named "Balu", informed him that a woman in India was interested in going to Singapore to work, according to the statement of facts seen by Mothership.
Balu then requested Alagiriraj to supervise and look after the woman in Singapore.
Alagiriraj subsequently made multiple phone calls and video calls from Singapore to reach the woman, who was in India.
He informed her that she would come to Singapore to work as a prostitute for 15 days and would receive 50,000 Indian rupees (S$697) when she was done.
Alagiriraj instructed the woman to hand over all the money she earned from prostitution, except for tips from customers, which she could retain.
The accused informed her that her flight and accommodation would be taken care of, and that he would assist with her visa arrangements.
The woman agreed to this arrangement.
Arranged for her to stay at two hotels
The woman arrived in Singapore on Feb. 15, 2025.
Alagiriraj met her at Changi Airport and arranged for her to stay in two hotels in Singapore from Feb. 15 to 21.
The accused served as the woman's sole point of contact in relation to her prostitution work throughout her time in Singapore.
Solicited for customers
On Feb. 15, Alagiriraj took the woman to a park near Tekka Market in Little India and instructed her to solicit for customers there.
He informed her that her rates for her sexual services would be S$50 for 30 minutes and S$100 for one hour.
He also instructed her to bring her customers to the two hotels in the vicinity to provide sexual services.
During her time in Singapore, the woman updated the accused through a WhatsApp group after providing sexual services to each customer.
Collected her earnings
Alagiriraj would visit the woman once a day to collect her earnings and to deliver food to her.
The woman provided sexual services at least 18 times and handed over at least S$900 to the accused.
The accused transferred this money to a bank account on the instructions of Balu.
The woman also gave the accused an extra S$100, of which he spent S$60 on food for her and kept the remaining S$40 for himself.
Balu separately gave the accused S$50 for his involvement.
Alagiriraj was arrested on Feb. 21.
