The fire onboard the Singapore-bound cruise ship, World Legacy, has been extinguished by Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) Marine firefighters.

The blaze, which broke out at around 4am on Feb. 20, left one crew member dead. The victim was later identified as an Indonesian national.

All 271 passengers have since been evacuated from the vessel and have disembarked at HarbourFront Ferry Terminal, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in an update on social media.

Four passengers taken to hospital

MPA initially reported that there were 224 passengers on board, but later clarified that the total number was 271, of whom 139 are Singaporeans.

Four passengers were conveyed to hospital for medical assessment following the blaze, MPA said.

The Liberia-registered vessel also carries 388 crew members, none of whom are Singaporean. A core crew will remain onboard to carry out essential operations, while the rest will be disembarked progressively.

In addition, classification society surveyors engaged by the vessel’s owners will board the ship to assess the extent of damage and the repairs to be carried out before returning the vessel to service.

Based on preliminary investigations, the fire occurred at the lounge area on deck nine of the vessel, MPA said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Deceased moved ashore

The body of the deceased crew member has been transferred ashore, MPA said.

The Indonesian embassy in Singapore has been informed, and relevant authorities are handling the necessary follow-up.

MPA added that it has established a safety zone around the vessel and is issuing navigational broadcasts to advise passing vessels to keep clear.

As of its latest update, the vessel remains in stable condition.
