A BMW driver allegedly refused to stop for a roadside inspection in the early hours of the first day of the Chinese New Year, sparking a police chase that spanned more than 9km.

The driver is said to have sped from Airport Road in Paya Lebar to a HDB estate in Punggol, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled.

According to Shin Min Daily News, videos circulating online showed at least five or six police vehicles at the scene.

The BMW has a Singapore license plate.

Stopped for inspection

The incident took place at about 2:20am on Feb. 17.

Police confirmed with Mothership that the traffic police were conducting a roadblock along Airport Rd towards Kallang–Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) when an officer signalled for a car to stop for a check.

The driver did not comply and instead sped off, they said.

Officers gave chase and subsequently located the car in the vicinity of Edgedale Plains.

Efforts to trace the driver are underway, the police said.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Car abandoned at Punggol

The car was found abandoned at the ground floor car park of Block 122A, Edgedale Plains in Punggol, Shin Min reported.

According to Google Maps, the distance from Airport Road to Edgedale Plains is about 9.3km.

Members of the public also reported seeing police cars pursuing a red BMW earlier along Hougang Street 12 and Rivervale Drive.

A grocery store employee in the Punngol HDB block told Shin Min that six or seven police cars were chasing the red BMW when it entered the estate and drove towards the car park.

“The shops had just closed, and I was on my way home when I suddenly saw a large number of police cars chasing around the HDB estate, but I didn't know exactly what had happened,” she said.

She added that the vehicle was towed away at around 8am.
