M'sia tuberculosis cases exceed 3,000, public urged to mask up at crowded places during Ramadan
A total of 596 new TB cases were recorded.
Malaysia's health ministry is reminding the public to exercise caution during Ramadan visits such as bazaars and breaking fast gatherings, as the number of tuberculosis (TB) cases rise and exceed 3,000.
In a Feb. 21 statement, the ministry logged a total of 596 new TB cases nationwide during the sixth epidemiological week, reported The Star.
This brings the overall number of cases to 3,161 across the country.
The ministry urged for mask-wearing in crowded and enclosed spaces, as these poorly ventilated spaces increase the risk of transmission, especially if an individual with untreated active TB is present.
Social interaction increases risk
Higher social interaction during the Chinese New Year and the month of Ramadan may increase exposure risks.
“Unlike influenza or Covid-19, TB spreads more slowly and usually requires prolonged and repeated exposure.”
According to The Star, the ministry advised the public to practice cough and sneeze etiquette and ensure good indoor ventilation.
Medical attention should be sought for coughs lasting more than two weeks.
Sabah recorded the highest number of cases at 755, followed by Selangor at 596, and Sarawak with 332.
Closer to home, Johor ranked next with 280 cases, while Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya had 244 cases.
