77 traffic accidents reported between 2023 & 2025 linked to suspected drug or etomidate use
Of all the cases, two were suspected to involve both drug and etomidate.
Between 2023 and 2025, 77 traffic accidents were suspected to be linked to drug and/or etomidate use.
In a written parliamentary reply, Coordinating Minister for National Security K Shanmugam added that of all the cases, two were suspected to involve both drug and etomidate use.
Of the 77 cases, 25 were suspected of drug use, while the remaining were suspected of etomidate use.
Shanmugam added that the traffic police assess motorists involved in an accident for impaired driving and, if they suspect drug or etomidate use, a blood test will be required.
Regarding penalties for driving under the influence, enhanced penalties are already in place.
Shanmugam explained that a first-time offender convicted of dangerous driving causing death while driving under the influence faces a jail term of up to 10 years and a minimum of 12 years' driving disqualification.
"The Ministry of Home Affairs will continue to monitor the adequacy of our penalties," he said.
