M'sia bank executive, 52, found dead with stab wounds weeks before wedding, police seeking son
The case is being investigated as a murder.
A 52-year-old bank executive in Malaysia was found dead at home with stab wounds on her body on Feb. 2, 2026, shortly before she was due to be remarried in mid-February 2026.
Prior to her death, the victim, Zaharullail Basir, was looking forward to her second marriage, China Press reported.
She had been discussing final details of the wedding banquet with her 57-year-old fiancé and preparations were almost complete.
Discovered by one of her children
Police were notified of her death around 8:45am on Feb. 2, New Straits Times reported.
One of the victim's sons had called the police to report a suspected murder involving his mother when she was found unconscious and covered in blood.
A police chief assistant commissioner said the victim was believed to have been stabbed in the body and struck on the head in the hours leading up to her death.
Manhunt for son ongoing
Upon arrival at the scene, police found that the victim had three stab wounds to her chest and palm. She had also sustained injuries to her head and face.
The police chief assistant commissioner revealed that a handbag containing jewellery, cash and a mobile phone was missing.
The victim lived with three of her children, aged eight, 13 and 18, China Press reported, adding that the victim's three other children are in their mid to late 20s and live independently.
Following investigations, police are actively seeking the woman's 28-year-old son, Amirul Shafiq Shamsul Zahari, to assist in the investigation at any nearby police station or by contacting the investigating officer, Malay Mail reported.
Murder motive under investigation
"The motive of the murder is under investigation," said the police chief assistant commissioner.
He added that a team from the forensics unit of the Kedah police headquarters, as well as the K-9 unit, have been dispatched to assist with the case.
Efforts are ongoing to arrest a suspect believed to be a relative, he revealed.
New Straits Times reported that if convicted of murder, offenders are liable to the death penalty or 30 to 40 years' jail, as well as whipping.
"The public is advised not to speculate or spread unverified information," cautioned the police chief assistant commissioner.
"The police seek the cooperation of witnesses, especially close family members or anyone with information about the incident, to provide statements at a nearby police station or at Kota Setar police headquarters," he added.
Members of the public may call 04-774 7222 to provide information regarding the case.
