China woman, 22, falls off bike & fractures finger, injury made worse due to nail extensions
She had to undergo surgery as the nail had broken and part of the nail bed was exposed.
A woman in China, who fractured her index finger after falling off an electric bike, was told by her surgeon that her injury would have been less severe if not for one thing: her manicure.
According to Sin Chew Daily, the 22-year-old woman, surnamed Wang, who had nail extensions done, was riding an electric bike when she fell.
Her index finger struck the ground on impact, causing severe pain as the extended nail broke and began to bleed.
She later sought medical attention at the Hangzhou Linping District Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine.
The orthopaedic surgeon who examined her found that she had sustained a fracture to her index finger, as well as a ruptured nail bed.
Surgery was required as the nail had broken and part of the nail bed was exposed.
The doctor later told Wang that her injuries would likely have been less serious without the nail extensions.
Wang subsequently underwent a closed reduction and internal fixation procedure and is said to be recovering well.
