S'pore police issue summonses to over 650 cyclists in last 6 months of 2025
The cyclists were found not to have been wearing helmets when cycling on roads or obeying traffic signals, among other violations.
The traffic police in Singapore have issued summonses to more than 650 cyclists for a range of traffic infringements over a period of six months from July to December 2025.
The cyclists were found not to have been wearing helmets when cycling on roads or obeying traffic signals, the police said in response to Mothership's queries.
A total of 9,302 people were injured in road accidents in 2024.
Cyclists and pillion passengers made up 591 (6.3 per cent) of those injured, based on Data.gov.sg figures.
The police said they would like to remind all cyclists to abide by cycling rules and guidelines, for their safety, and the safety of others.
They must:
- Obey all traffic signals and travel in the same direction as the flow of traffic.
- Wear helmets when cycling on roads.
- Always ride as close as practicable to the far left edge of roads, and allow traffic to overtake them safely.
- Cycle in a single file on single-lane roads and during bus lane operational hours.
- Switch on front white and rear red lights in the dark.
- Always use bicycle lanes when available, and do not use any other part of the roadway.
- Keep to a maximum length of five bicycles when riding in groups, which means a maximum of five cyclists if riding in a single file, or 10 cyclists if riding two abreast (only on roads with more than one lane).
- Refrain from using mobile communication devices while riding.
- Refrain from cycling on expressways, in road tunnels, and selected viaducts.
The police added: "This demonstrates our continued commitment to road safety and to ensuring that all road users, including cyclists, comply with the road safety rules."
"The police will sustain regular enforcement actions and public-education initiatives to promote safe riding practices," they added.
