Woman in S'pore, 34, charged for allegedly telling daughter to drop rape case against stepfather to be 'one happy family again'
She also allegedly told her daughter that she would give her anything she wanted.
A 34-year-old woman was charged in court on Feb. 4 after allegedly telling her daughter to drop an aggravated rape case against her then-stepfather in order for them to be "one happy family again".
According to The Straits Times, the woman was handed three charges of performing an act that could pervert the course of justice.
Both the woman and the man involved cannot be named due to a gag order protecting the identity of the alleged victim.
The outcome of the man's aggravated rape case was not disclosed.
Urged daughter to lie
Citing court documents, ST reported that on Jun. 23, 2022, the woman allegedly told her daughter to tell the police that the statement she had given against the man was false.
The man was under investigation for aggravated rape at the time.
The woman also allegedly relayed the man’s directions for the daughter the next day.
She reportedly told her daughter to tell the "deputy public prosecutors (DPPs)" that she wished to drop the case and had provided a "false statement" to the police.
She also allegedly promised to give her daughter anything she wanted if she did so.
In early 2023, the woman purportedly told her daughter that if she withdrew the case, she would remain in a girls' home "for only about two years".
She is also accused of telling her daughter that the man would otherwise face a prison term of around 20 to 30 years, while she was in a girls' home for a much shorter period of time.
The mother also allegedly told her daughter that they could reunite as "one happy family" upon her release.
The woman’s pre-trial conference is scheduled for Mar. 11.
Each charge of perverting the course of justice carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ jail, a fine, or both.
