There is a need to recognise that public spaces are shared by everyone, including migrant domestic workers (MDWs) on their rest days, even as initiatives are being undertaken to provide alternative gathering spaces, Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng said in a written answer on Feb. 4.

Tan was responding to a question filed in Parliament by Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC Member of Parliament (MP) Diana Pang.

Pang asked about the measures the Minister of Manpower (MOM) will take to address residents' noise and littering complaints arising from activities such as recording TikTok dances at congregation spots for MDWs.

Migrant domestic workers encouraged to be considerate

Tan replied that MOM monitors locations where MDWs congregate on their rest days and works with agencies and partners in the community to manage disamenities that may arise in such areas.

Since 2025, MOM has been piloting the use of community spaces in Clementi and Paya Lebar to provide MDWs with accessible and conducive resting spaces on Sundays.

Tan also said that MOM invites non-governmental organisations to conduct recreational activities and training programmes at these spaces, and that it shares activity information with MDWs via its WhatsApp channel.

Tan added:

"Even as we encourage MDWs to be considerate when using public spaces and endeavour to provide alternative gathering spaces for them, we do need to recognise that public spaces are shared by everyone, including MDWs on their rest days."
