U.S. president Donald Trump is quite fixated on Greenland.

Trump recently said the U.S. "needed" to acquire Greenland.

Greenland is a semi-autonomous region of Denmark.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later told lawmakers that the Trump administration did not plan to invade the island.

He, however, did mention buying the island from Denmark.

Following up on that train of thought, a few U.S. officials told Reuters a few options the administration is weighing.

One of them being money.

According to Reuters, while the exact "dollar figure and logistics of any payment are unclear", U.S. officials have discussed figures ranging from US$10,000 (S$12,855) to US$100,000 (S$128,558) per person, said two of the sources.

There are 57,000 people on the island.

European leaders have said the decision about its autonomy is up to Greenland and Denmark.

Why Greenland?

There are a host of reasons why Trump might want Greenland.

According to CNA, they have untapped rare earth minerals, and could be essential for trade as the polar ice melts and new shipping routes emerge.

Trump has also said the island is necessary for U.S. national security.
