Telegram WhatsappJensen Huang, the CEO of American tech giant Nvidia, said he is "perfectly fine" with paying US$7.75 billion (S$9.9 billion) in taxes.

According to CNBC, the staggering sum could be imposed on Huang under a proposed one-time five per cent wealth tax on billionaires in the state of California, U.S., where he is currently residing.

The initiative targets anyone with a net worth exceeding US$1.1 billion (S$1.4 billion), with the funds going to the state's health care budget.

As of January 2026, Huang reportedly has a net worth of US$155 billion (S$199 billion).

"I’ve got to tell you, I have not even thought about it once," he said about his concerns on the proposed law.

"We chose to live in Silicon Valley, and whatever taxes they would like to apply, so be it. I’m perfectly fine with it," CNBC quoted.

Billionaire tax

The billionaire tax initiative was proposed in November 2025 and is backed by lawmakers, including Vermont senator Bernie Sanders.

With enough signatures, it will be voted on during California's November 2026 ballot.

It is projected to raise roughly US$100 billion (S$128.5 billion) from the state's 200 wealthiest people, of which Huang, currently the ninth-wealthiest person in the world, is among.

He is estimated to own about three per cent of Nvidia, a company worth more than US$4.6 trillion (S$5.9 trillion).

Other billionaires in California appear less apathetic over the proposed tax, with some saying it would force billionaire founders to sell huge chunks of their companies or flee the state.

Huang, on the other hand, says Nvidia's location puts them in a good spot because "that's where the talent pool is".
