Taiwanese actress Shu Qi to attend S'pore International Film Festival for directorial debut screening

Fans can meet and hear her talk about the film on Nov. 27.

Taiwanese star Shu Qi will be in Singapore for the screening of her directorial debut film Girl, which is set to open the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) on Nov. 26.

The SGIFF, marking its 36th run in 2025, released its full programme on Oct. 24 with over 120 films from more than 45 countries.

The actress-director, who stars in the new Netflix series The Resurrected, will attend the opening red-carpet event alongside the two main cast members from the film, Bai Xiao-ying and 9m88, Variety reported.

Girl had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on Sep. 4, where it was also nominated for the prestigious Golden Lion award.

Shu Qi, who has earned three Hong Kong Film Awards and two Golden Horse Awards over her acting career, picked up the best director award for Girl at the Busan International Film Festival.

There will also be an In Conversation with Shu Qi session with Mediacorp Artiste and returning Festival Ambassador, Rebecca Lim, on Nov. 27.  

Other programme highlights

SGIFF also announced on Oct. 24 that Oscar-nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta will receive the Cinema Honorary Award, the festival's highest accolade.

It is the first time the award has been given to a woman, according to Variety.

The festival will showcase a selection of her acclaimed films in a retrospective titled "Deepa Mehta In Focus", and hold a conversation session with Mehta on Dec. 5, 7pm, at the National Gallery.

Another award recipient at the SGIFF is Youn Yuh-jung, the Oscar-winning South Korean actress of Minari.

Youn will receive the Screen Icon Award, and also be interviewed in a conversation session on Dec. 6, 7pm, at Golden Village Suntec City.

Apart from international stars, the 2025 SGIFF will also shine a spotlight on Singapore films, featuring 30 titles by local filmmakers.

The "Singapore Panorama" section will highlight four feature films and 21 short films, including the opening featureThe Old Man and the Car.

Early-bird pre-sales for SGIFF will open to SGIFFriends on Oct. 27 at 12pm, while public sales will start on Oct. 31 at 12pm.
