U.S. President Donald Trump said that a Ukraine peace deal could increase his chances of getting to heaven.

"I want to try and get to heaven if possible," Trump told Fox News morning show, Fox & Friends, on Tuesday (Aug. 19).

"If I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons"

"I'm hearing I'm not doing well. I didn't really hit the bottom of the totem pole. But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons."

The 79-year-old, who has long expressed his desire for a Nobel Peace Prize, has been pushing for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Aug. 15, where the two parties discussed the war in Ukraine, though no agreement was reached in the meeting.

He hosted Ukraine and several European leaders at the White House on Monday, where they discussed an "urgent end" to the war in Ukraine, NBC News reported.

More religious tone

Trump, who has been married thrice and impeached twice, is the first U.S. President to have a criminal conviction in the hush money case.

He was found guilty of falsifying business records related to a case of payment to an adult film star.

AFP observed that Trump has taken on a more religious tone since surviving an assassination attempt last year.

During his inaugural address in January, the U.S. President said that he was "saved by God to make America great again".

"I think the President wants to get to heaven"

Trump established the White House Faith Office in February 2025.

He also appointed a spiritual advisor, Pastor Paula White-Cain, who AFP reported has led prayer meetings that saw several attendees laying their hands on Trump at White House events.

Trump's Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked at a press briefing on Tuesday (Aug. 19) whether the U.S. President was "joking or is there spiritual motivation behind his peace deals".

In response, Leavitt said she believed that Trump was serious about his comments.

"I think the President wants to get to heaven, as I hope we all do in this room as well."
