A Chinese national has been sentenced to one month's jail and a fine of RM2,000 (S$608) for assaulting an immigration officer at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Malaysia.

The Sepang Magistrate's Court handed down the sentence on Fang Fuyuan, 31, who pleaded guilty to the charge, Bernama reported.

The sentence was read out in Mandarin by a court interpreter.

Fang was ordered to serve her sentence from the date of her arrest.

She is to serve another two months of jail should she fail to pay the fine.

"A case of misunderstanding"

Fang's lawyers, Tai Ying Fong and Jason Anthony, had sought a lighter sentence based on her young age and the lack of a criminal record, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported.

They also said that Fang has a husband and two young children, aged one and a half and five years, who are "completely dependent on her".

The family is in Malaysia without the support of other family members, according to her lawyers.

"This was a case of misunderstanding and miscommunication with the immigration officer. It occurred spontaneously and was not planned," Fang's lawyers said, as quoted by FMT.

However, the prosecutor sought a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to both Fang and the public.

What happened

Fang was arrested after reportedly assaulting an immigration officer during a departure inspection.

Fang and her three family members were stopped because they apparently did not have entry records into Malaysia.

Unhappy with being stopped, Fang started hurling verbal insults at the officer.

She then allegedly proceeded to grab the officer's tudung and push her against a pillar in front of the counter.

Despite repeated instructions, Fang refused to calm down.

The security team ultimately stepped in, and Fang was eventually placed under police custody.

The officer suffered swelling under her eye, headaches and body aches, and was sent to Cyberjaya Hospital for treatment.
