The Projector at Golden Mile Tower shuts down on Aug. 19 after 11 years

Two weeks after the closure of its cinema at Cineleisure Orchard on Aug. 4, The Projector announced that it will be ceasing operations today (Aug. 19) at its original Golden Mile Tower location as well.

In an Instagram post on Aug. 19, The Projector shared that it will enter voluntary liquidation, as the "realities of the cinema industry have been increasingly unforgiving".

It cited challenges such as the rising operational costs, shifting audience habits, and the global decline in cinema attendance.

These factors have not made sustaining an independent cinema in Singapore easy, it said.

It added:

"These pressures have been compounded by the broader realities of operating in the arts and culture sector in Singapore, where independent ventures navigate limited resources while contributing to the country’s evolving cultural landscape."

A decade

The Projector first opened its doors in 2014, and served as a cultural and events space bringing together artists, filmmakers and audiences.

"From showcasing award-winning independent films to hosting film festivals, like the Singapore International Film Festival, the European Film Festival, Pink Screen, poetry slams, vintage markets, and charity fundraisers, The Projector has remained committed to broadening the definition of cinema and a community space in Singapore."

Since May 2025, The Projector no longer held daily screenings at Golden Mile, and instead shifted to “eventised screenings”, interactive film experiences, live music showcases, corporate venue hires and other events, reported The Straits Times.

The Projector co-founder Karen Tan called the move a strategic pivot that would help the company plan for the future.

Daily film screenings would continue to be held at its Cineleisure location, but that too ceased to operate earlier this month.
