The summit at Alaska between US president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin yielded no agreement to end, or even pause, the war in Ukraine.

Nevertheless, both leaders described the talks as productive.

"There's no deal until there's a deal" Trump said.

Putin, in a rare use of English, also alluded to future talks, saying "next time in Moscow?" to which Trump said he might catch "a little heat" on that, but that it could be a possibility.

Trump later told Fox News that he would hold off on imposing tariffs on China for buying Russian oil after the Putin meeting.

He also hinted at discussions with Putin regarding potential land swaps and security guarantees for Ukraine; Trump told Fox News they were matters "we negotiated, and those are points that we largely have agreed on."

"I think we're pretty close to a deal," he said, according to Reuters.

"Ukraine has to agree to it. Maybe they'll say no," he added, before saying that his advice to the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky would be, "gotta make a deal".
