A new programme now allows members of the public to get active while discovering iconic landmarks across Singapore with a gamified twist.

The five Community Development Councils (CDCs), in collaboration with the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech Singapore), launched Walking Trails@CDC on Aug. 16 at Assumption Pathway School.

The event was attended by Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs Edwin Tong who is also Deputy Chairman of the People’s Association, as well as five mayors Low Yen Ling, Alex Yam, Baey Yam Keng, Dinesh Vasu Dash, and Denise Phua Lay Peng.

There were also 250 participants for the inaugural walk comprising members of various CDCs’ brisk walking interest groups, as well as volunteers and partners.

Five trails

There are a total of five trails that members of the public can experience.

They are the Central Singapore CDC Trail, North East CDC Trail, South East CDC Trail, South West CDC Trail and North West CDC Trail.

With a distance of not more than 6 kilometres per trail, there are five checkpoints each trail that members of the public can complete.

For the North West CDC Trail, the checkpoints are

  1. Walkway outside Cashew MRT
  2. Access path from Hillview Road
  3. Singapore Quarry
  4. Hindhede Crossing
  5. Bukit Timah Railway Station

Here are the other checkpoints for other trails.

After completing a checkpoint, the participant's progress will be saved and members of the public can return to the same checkpoint to continue the trail.

There is a three-hour timeout between checkpoints and participants will have to return to the last completed checkpoint to continue the trail.

Mayor of North West District Alex Yam said: “With the largest Brisk Walking Community in Singapore, as well as 5 other Healthy Living Clubs, North West CDC has been championing health and wellness and bringing the community together through these community activities over the years."

Some considerations for selecting the landmarks include where people can stop and gather safely as well as identifying interesting spots that Singaporeans may not be aware of.

CDC Ollies

On top of completing checkpoints, there are five digital mascots to be collected as a side quest and each embody one of CDCs’ five community pillars:

Collecting the CDC Ollies unlocks additional rewards.

There is generally a 20 per cent chance of collecting each Ollie except the Carefree Ollie which is rarer.

Incentives

The first 5,000 participants on each of the five trails who complete all five checkpoints or collect all five CDC Ollies in the Side Quest will receive a S$5 RedeemSG Rewards voucher respectively.

This means that if you complete all five checkpoints as well as find and collect all five CDC Ollies in one trail, you will receive S$10 of RedeemSG Rewards vouchers.

RedeemSG Rewards can be spent at this list of participating supermarkets.

How to join the trails

Safety advisory

Before you begin the trail, there will be safety advisories as part of the onboarding tutorial such as to beware of vehicles and being mindful of steps, slopes and crowds near the MRT.

There is also an average speed to get from from one checkpoint to another by walking so you cannot drive or take the train from one checkpoint to the next as it will be detected.

Steps in the trail

To get started, select one of the five trails to complete and take the following steps during the trail.

  1. Pick a trail
  2. Follow the map checkpoints
  3. Complete tasks
  4. Collect CDC Ollies
  5. Collect rewards

The trails can be found on the CrowdTaskSG platform.

Walking Trails@CDC is open to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents aged 15 and above with Singpass and CrowdTaskSG accounts.

Upon completing a trail, RedeemSG Rewards vouchers are automatically issued and can be accessed via your CrowdTaskSG account.
