A 27-year-old Singaporean man, who was the driver of the Maserati involved in the May 9 fatal incident along the Malaysia–Singapore Second Link Expressway in Johor, has pleaded not guilty in court in Malaysia.

Irshad Abdul Hameed, 27, a civil servant in Singapore, made the plea after his charge was read out in court, Free Malaysia Today reported.

Irshad was accused of driving his Maserati dangerously and causing the death of A Vasanthraj, 32, at 6:40pm that day.

He was charged under the Road Transport Act 1987 with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

He could be jailed up to 10 years and fined up to RM50,000 (S$15,090) if found guilty.

The motorcyclist died after crashing into a metal road barrier, which was allegedly left protruding out onto the right-most lane of the road towards Singapore.

Irshad, travelling in the direction of Johor initially, had allegedly crashed into the barrier while making an illegal U-turn.

The motorcyclist was confirmed dead at the scene due to severe injuries to his head and left leg as he was unable to avoid crashing into the metal barrier.

Accused's lawyers said car malfunctioned, didn't make illegal U-turn

The Singaporean man was represented by two lawyers.

The lawyers reportedly told media outside the court that Irshad did not make an illegal U-turn that day.

Rather, his car supposedly malfunctioned and he crashed into the barrier and stalled on the opposite side of the road.

About 10 minutes later, a motorcyclist crashed into the metal barrier and it was not Irshad's car that hit the biker.

The Maserati was seen being vandalised by other road users following the accident.

The driver and its passenger were seen being confronted by motorists.

The court set bail at RM12,000 (S$3,620).

Irshad has to report to a nearby police station once a month and his driving licence has been suspended.

His case will be heard again on Jun. 10.
