Lots of names.

Every election will see quite a number of new faces turning up for different political parties.

We've rounded up every candidate that has had their name bandied around these past few months, and some new faces that have surfaced as the election draws closer.

So how does this list work? If this is a prospective candidate's first time potentially participating in an election, they go on the list.

And if you have participated in a GE before, if you are rumoured to be representing a party you have never ran for before, you make the list too.

For example, both Lam Pin Min and Kala Manickam took part in GE 2020, both did not get elected, both are expected (one more certain than the other of course) to run in the upcoming GE.

Lam would not make the list as he would most likely run for PAP (the same party he ran for in 2020), but Kala would make the list, as this is the first time she would run with Red Dot United (her previous GE run was with the Progress Singapore Party).

With that out of the way, here are all the folks that have been rumoured to be running and where they could potentially run.

PAP

In GE 2020, PAP fielded a whopping 27 new candidates.

Image from PAP.org

So the following list might seem like a lot, but it's probably not too outside the realm of possibility.

One way to see if someone is going to be a potential PAP candidate is to see if they are a branch chairperson for a constituency they are challenging for.

Which is a great segue to kick off our list.

Adrian Ang, 42

PAP has seen quite a bit of a shakeup in their Aljunied branch, one of them being former vice-chairperson Adrian Ang replacing Victor Lye as chair of the Bedok Reservoir-Punggol branch.

Ang is a director at Chye Thiam Maintenance, which provides integrated facility and environmental management services.

Now that about covers it for the ruling party, what about their primary challenger?

Workers' Party

WP fielded 12 new candidates (we will count Nicole Seah as a new candidate, because this was the first time she competed with WP) out of a total of 21 candidates in the 2020 election.

This time around experts predict the party will contest around 31 seats.

WP has always been tight-lipped about where their candidates will stand in an upcoming election. In 2015, Low Thia Khiang continued the party's tradition of announcing the slate of candidates before nomination day, but not where they were running in.

Current WP leader Pritam Singh appears to be abiding by that same rule. An ST article cited Singh at a WP forum saying there was little purpose to reveal who their candidates would be and where they would stand before nomination day, without a "strategic or tactical" reason.

This is a very rough, and potentially super-inaccurate, gauge of who will run, but potential candidates that have a public Facebook page like this:

Or a variant of that descriptor, like public service, or even politician, will be a good bet for an election run in the upcoming election. Keep that in mind.

Anyway let's run through the potential new faces for WP.

Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik, 35

Sengkang GRC will need one more candidate to replace Raeesah Khan for the upcoming election.

And considering how tightly WP holds their cards to their chest, it involves quite a bit of guesswork to their potential candidates prior to nomination day.

This pick though might actually be one of the less speculative candidates.

Image from Jamus Lim Facebook

The Senior Property Manager with Aljunied-Hougang Town Council has been spotted on many walkabouts with Sengkang GRC MPs.

Perhaps more pointedly, Pritam posted a photo of the three current Sengkang MPs with Muhaimin, referring to them as "Team Sengkang".

Andre Low, 33

And that completes the non-exhaustive list for WP, now on to the party with the third-most members in the parliament.

Progress Singapore Party

PSP made quite the splash in the previous general election, securing the best-performing loss of the GE in West Coast GRC, which in turn propelled Hazel Poa and Leong Mun Wai into parliament as NCMPs.

During a walkabout in Taman Jurong, now part of the West Coast-Jurong West constituency, Tan Cheng Bock said this area was "not new to him", he also said the party was keeping their "options open".

So can they build on their impressive debut in the last election?

Under our established criteria, technically everyone who ran for PSP in 2020 was a new candidate back then since that was their maiden election, but who might join the still relatively new party this time round?
