Manchester United loses 4-1 to Newcastle, guaranteed worst finish in Premier League era
Manchester United is now 14th in the Premier League table.
Manchester United was defeated by Newcastle 4-1 in a match on Sunday (Apr. 13).
Alexander Garnacho cancelled out Sandro Tonali's opener, but two goals by Harvey Barnes and a strike by Bruno Guimaraes compounded a humiliating afternoon for the Red Devils.
Manchester United had dropped their first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana, after his error cost the team a victory in the Europa League against Olympique Lyonnais.
But the change didn't appear to help, with backup Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir left red-faced after his own error led to the fourth Newcastle goal.
The loss means that Manchester United can no longer reach the 58 points they recorded in the 2021/2022 season, making this year their worst-ever finish since the Premier League era started in 1992.
The New York Times previously dubbed Manchester United's 21/22 season the "worst United season in Premier League history".
The Sunday's loss leaves Manchester United 14th in the Premier League table, at 38 points.
