A man was nearly hit by a falling iron frame from a vent at Woodlands MRT on Aug. 23.

In response to the incident, SMRT has cordoned off the affected area and is investigating the accident.

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, a retiree surnamed Chen, 67, said he was walking towards the MRT at around 3pm.

When he passed the fan room, he suddenly heard a loud "bang" behind him.

Turning around, he saw the iron frame of the ventilation window on the ground, less than two meters away from him.

He described the incident as "scary", and said that he could easily have been hit.

"I still remember two women standing nearby saying I was really lucky when they saw the iron frame fall. I also felt like I had escaped a disaster," he said.

He failed to inform station staff as he was in a hurry.

When a Shin Min reporter visited the scene the next day, the ventilation window was covered with tarp.

SMRT's response

In response to Mothership's queries, Vincent Gay, Deputy Managing Director of SMRT buses said that a ventilation cover from the fan room located above the Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub was dislodged.

"To ensure the safety of passers-by, our staff promptly cordoned off the affected area. A temporary cover has been installed, and we are currently investigating the cause of the incident," he said.
