A raid at an industrial building in Senoko on Thursday (Apr. 13) saw some 2.2 tonnes (or, 2,200kg) of food seized by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).
Frozen pork, beef, chicken, fish and frog, among other meat and seafood, were found in "large quantities", and had been imported from "unapproved sources", without the required licence, said SFA on Apr. 15.
The food items had been illegally imported from Vietnam, said the agency, which cited the potential food safety risks of products from unknown sources.
Food can only be imported by licensed importers, and consignments must be declared and accompanied with valid import permits, SFA said.
SFA also found an unlicensed cold store with seven chest freezers and two chillers, and the agency highlighted how meat and seafood stored in unlicensed facilities poses food safety risks.
Cold stores for meat and seafood products in Singapore must be licensed and are required to meet SFA’s requirements and food safety standards, said the agency.
Besides food, SFA also found 470 bottles of alcohol and an assortment of medicines, and referred them to the Singapore Customs and the Health Sciences Authority respectively for further investigations.
"Members of the public with information on such illegal activities are requested to provide feedback via our online feedback form (www.sfa.gov.sg/feedback) with details for our follow-up investigations," said SFA, adding that all information will be kept strictly confidential.
