A woman was allegedly "admonished" for breaking her fast by eating a chocolate bar on the MRT.
Sharing her story with SGFollowsAll on Instagram, the woman said that the incident happened on Apr. 12.
According to the woman, she boarded the MRT at around 6:30 pm at Clementi, heading towards Bedok.
A ride that would take approximately 46 minutes, according to Google Maps.
Unable to leave the station to break her fast
In the post on SGFollowsAll, she wrote that she did not have the "luxury" of alighting from the train, go out of the station to eat, then return to board the train.
Speaking to AsiaOne, the woman said that it was because she had to rush home to attend a class and needed to help her parents to clean up after their iftar.
She had a Snickers bar on her, and she decided to eat it on the train at 7:11 pm, which was the time to break fast.
However, she shared that as she unwrapped the candy bar, a lady in her mid-30s admonished her, saying that "eating on MRT is illegal and pointed at the sign sticker on the window".
She explained that she was fasting and she had to eat as she was "too tired from work" and "it is mandatory to eat either ways," but the lady ignored her and "persisted that I save the candy and not eat there".
The woman complied and stopped eating her chocolate bar.
She then asked the lady what if someone with low blood sugar needs to eat; the lady repeated that the woman should not eat on the MRT.
The woman then got off at Bedok and asked an MRT staff if she was allowed to consume "finger snacks that are dry and those without aroma".
The MRT staff allegedly told her that it was permitted.
"What I want to convey is that please be considerate when someone is consuming candies or food that [doesn't] soil the place on public transport. You might not know how urgent it is for them. Especially Muslims who are fasting. If possible, if [you] see a Muslim on board and it is time to break fast, and they are not having anything, offer them if you have something!"
Mix reaction in the comments section
While some comments under the post have shamed the lady by calling her a "Karen", others pointed out that eating a whole chocolate bar is too much and the lady could have broken her fast with something smaller, like dates or drinking water.
Some even said that bringing up the MRT staff who said it was allowed to eat on the train was too much, as she might have jeopardised the staff's job.
