In view of Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2023, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the country will have an additional public holiday either on Friday (Apr. 21) or Monday (Apr. 24), depending on when Hari Raya starts.
This will result in a four-day holiday for Malaysians.
Additional public holiday
In a press conference on Tuesday (Apr. 18) afternoon, Anwar explained that if Hari Raya Aidilfitri falls on Friday (Apr. 21) in Malaysia, that day will be a public holiday, while an additional public holiday will be given the following Monday (Apr. 24).
If Aidilfitri falls on Saturday (Apr. 22), the additional public holiday will be given on Friday (Apr. 21), while the Hari Raya public holiday will be fixed for Monday (Apr. 24).
This means that regardless of when Hari Raya Aidilfitri starts in Malaysia, the country will get a four-day holiday from Friday (Apr. 21) to Monday (Apr. 24).
Anwar said this will only apply for Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan. Sabah and Sarawak can declare their own state holidays, he added.
"The government remains committed to ensure the welfare of our people will be looked after in all aspects," said Anwar.
Toll exemptions
On top of the additional public holiday, Anwar announced a toll collection exemption for four days in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The toll exemptions will be from Wednesday (Apr. 19) to Friday (Apr. 21), as well as on Monday (Apr. 24).
It will cover 33 highways in Malaysia and all vehicle classes.
"The toll exemptions will reduce the cost of toll payment for those who will return to their respective kampung for the festivities, as well as facilitate the planning of their trip back to their kampung,” said Anwar.
