A nine-year-old girl and her mother were found dead after falling from the third floor of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum on Friday (Mar. 10).
According to Chinese online media, they were on a trip there with the girl's grandmother.
Girl fell while standing on seats
The family of three was believed to be resting in a seated area on the third floor before the accident happened.
Reports claimed that the girl was standing on the seats and missed her footing, causing her to fall over the glass railing behind the seat.
Mother fell together while trying to save her
The mother purportedly tried to grab her daughter in desperation, but they both fell from a height of over 20m.
Photos show the grandmother crying beside the motionless mother and daughter.
The mother was reported to have survived the fall, while her daughter was pronounced dead on the scene.
Media reports claimed that the mother subsequently passed away in the hospital.
Netizens question floor design
Some online commenters questioned the area's design and thought the railing was not high enough.
Others pointed out that the railing’s height was already up to an adult’s chest and felt that the girl should not have stood on the seats.
Some also commented that the placement of chairs near the glass railing could have contributed to the tragedy.
