It is not yet goodbye for Singapore's last kacang puteh seller.
Back to work on Feb. 27
The man behind the stall, 56-year-old Amirthaalangaram Moorthy, told Mothership he will be in back to work at Peace Centre tomorrow (Feb. 27).
The third-generation kacang puteh seller has inherited the business from his father and prepares the food by hand using a secret family recipe.
He shared that while his S$600 rent did not increase over the past few years, he closed his stall temporarily in early February as business has been poor due to the pandemic.
Fortunately, the building's new management has waived his rent for the next six months, allowing him to return.
Peace Centre to be redeveloped
However, when asked about his plans for the future, Moorthy said he was unsure, citing the upcoming "renovation".
Together with Peace Mansion, Peace Centre has been sold en bloc for S$650 million, with plans to redevelop it into a mixed-use commercial and residential development.
Moorthy's pushcart is open outside Peace Centre from Monday to Saturday, from 10:30am to 7pm.
