We ask some S’porean fans which international football team they’re rooting for

Asking the important questions.

With the commencement of the biggest international football tournament this year, football fever is at its peak globally.

It’s apparent in Singapore too as many fans of the sport stay up late despite their busy schedule to watch their favourite teams compete.

In fact, I’ve seen some shed a few tears when the team they support gets eliminated from the tournament.

As a massive football fan myself, I completely understand the sentiment. My heart shattered into a million pieces when my favourite team, Argentina, lost that match against Saudi Arabia.

That’s the thing about football, it tests your loyalty and pushes you to the edge sometimes.

So to see how others in Singapore are coping with the ongoing tournament, I decided to ask some of my football-loving friends about the team they are rooting for.

[Disclaimer: The following quotes were taken on Dec. 6, 2022, before the quarter-finals.]

“Trust me, Brazil will win” — T, 25

“I’ve been supporting Brazil since I was in primary school. They’ve always been a powerful team.

This year, to me, they are the strongest because they have a really good squad. The players also have good chemistry with one another.

They’ve been performing really well in the tournament and they’ve been making me very proud and happy. I have a good feeling about this.

Trust me, Brazil will win. I know they will.”

“England has what it takes” — O, 20

“If you look at England, they have a lot of talented young players right now. They haven’t lost a single match so far.

There are some people who look down on England, especially after they lost the finals in the last European Championship.

But I stand by my team, always. England has what it takes.

The trophy is coming home.”

“My heart belongs to the Samurai Blue” — H, 23

“If you ask me which team I think is the best right now, it will probably be either Argentina or Brazil.

But my heart belongs to the Samurai Blue (Japan).

I know they’re out of the tournament already after the loss to Croatia. I cried by the way after that match. They were so close to reaching the quarter-finals. But it is what it is.

I’m still very proud of the team though. If you look at how they played this tournament, they did really well.

I had friends who mocked me when I told them that Japan would beat the European teams in the Group Stage.

But my faith in Japan was worth it when they surprised the world by defeating Germany and Spain.”
