After a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19, physical Ramadan bazaars are set to return for Hari Raya this year, with two locations confirmed at Wisma Geylang Serai (WGS) and Kampong Gelam.
Minister of State for National Development Faishal Ibrahim made the announcement on his Facebook page on Mar. 15, and also confirmed that there will be Hari Raya light-ups at both locations for the public to enjoy.
Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar
The Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar was rumoured to be making a comeback this year after the People's Association launched an open tender on Mar. 1 to get organisers for the event.
The bazaar, called the "Geylang Serai Hari Raya Shopping Experience", is slated to run from Apr. 2 to May 2, the eve of Hari Raya.
However, this year's bazaar will likely be a much smaller affair than pre-Covid-19 days.
According to The Straits Times (ST), the bazaar will be open from 1pm to 11pm and will comprise of two zones near the WGS building, with a maximum of 20 stalls in each zone.
Today reported that the total number of food stalls will be capped at eight.
Vaccination-differentiated safe management measures (VDS) will also be implemented for entry into the bazaar.
In 2019, the last time the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar was held in person, there were about 500 stalls spread across a larger area, according to Today.
There were also reportedly two million people who visited the bazaar that year.
Kampong Gelam bazaar
According to Have Halal Will Travel, several food vendors have already confirmed their participation at the Kampong Gelam bazaar.
These vendors include Chulop!, Kream, and Ramadan bazaar staple Broti.
More details to be released in coming weeks
Faishal said more details about the two bazaars would be announced in the coming weeks on WGS and One Kampong Gelam.
"I hope that these two events will add festive cheer to this year’s celebrations but please remember to remain cautious and observe the stipulated Safe Management Measures at all times so that we can continue to keep each other safe," said Faishal.
