Possible 7 years' jail, caning for 6 men charged with rioting at Yishun St 11

One was charged on Aug. 7, while the other five were charged on Aug. 9.

Six men, between the ages of 19 and 27, have been charged for rioting at Yishun Street 11, said the Singapore Police Force in a news release on Aug. 10.

Commotion in the early hours of Aug. 7

The police was received a call for assistance regarding a commotion involving a large group of people along Yishun Street 11 at about 12:20am on Aug. 7.

Upon arrival, the officers found an injured 26-year-old man, who was conveyed to the hospital.

After follow-up investigations and ground enquiries, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identities of the six men who were allegedly involved.

They were arrested by the police for their suspected involvement in a case of rioting. One of the men, aged 24, was charged with rioting on the same day (Aug. 7).

The remaining five men were charged with the same offence in court on Aug. 9.

Possible jail, caning

If found guilty of rioting, offenders may face an imprisonment term of up to seven years and caning.

Additionally, the police said they are also investigating the six men for their alleged breach of safe distancing measures under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.

If found guilty for non compliance and of breaching, offenders may be jailed for up to six months, fined up to S$10,000, or both.
