The residence of a 14-year-old Chinese gold medallist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games was flooded with fans after her performance.
Quan Hongchan also received gift offers and cash money for her and her family upon her victory.
Other businesses were also showering her with gifts, including a flat and a commercial property.
A local businessman even offered her father 200,000 yuan (S$41,000).
All these were declined by her father.
“I thank them for coming. But I did not take anything. I did not take a penny,” he was quoted by Southern Metropolitan Daily.
According to South China Morning Post, some of the snacks received as gifts had been given out to children in the village whereas other gifts were kept by the village committee.
According to Global Times, a hospital in her hometown of Zhanjiang announced on Aug. 6, that they were willing to help her ill mother and grandfather by providing a full range of medical services.
Quan actually first got into diving as she wanted to earn money to help pay for her mother's medical bills.
Climbed a tree to see the Olympian
Besides gifts and prizes, people were so inspired by Quan's story and performance that they would go to her village to catch a glimpse of the teenage medallist.
The village received nearly 2,000 visitors a day after Quan's Olympic win, China Discipline Inspection and Supervision News reported.
It added that the visitors would hang around till late at night, causing inconvenience her neighbours and family.
They would even climb trees to get a better view, BBC added.
It added that some were flocking to her village, knocking on the door to take selfies with her family members.
Some even going to the extent of trying to steal jackfruits from her home as souvenirs.
Insider reported that the authorities had closed off the village to visitors due to Covid-19 restrictions.
