M'sia reports 20,596 new Covid-19 cases, highest ever in a day

Malaysia recorded its highest ever daily number of Covid-19 cases with 20,596 cases reported today (Aug. 5).

This is the first time the country recorded more than 20,000 cases.

This brings the total number of cases in Malaysia to 1,203,706.

Previously, the highest count was on Aug. 4 with 19,819 cases recorded.

Malaysia's health ministry said that Selangor saw the highest number of daily infections with 8,549 cases recorded today, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 2,163 cases.

On Jul. 14, a virologist from the Universiti Sains Malaysia Kumitaa Theva Das warned that in two weeks, Malaysia will record more than 20,000 daily cases of Covid-19 infection.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's Director-General for Health Noor Hisham said that Covid-19 infections in the country will peak at 24,000 cases per day by September 2021, Sinar Harian reported.

Vaccination rate

As of Aug. 4, Malaysia's National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme reported that 45.8 per cent of the population had received one dose of Covid-19 vaccine while 23.6 per cent received both doses of vaccine.

The Vibes also reported that the health ministry today (Aug. 5) gave conditional approval for Moderna vaccine to be used.
