A traditional Chinese dessert cafe in Bedok North has incorporated contemporary Instagrammable elements into its premises, providing a striking contrast between theme and fare.
Opened on May 18, 2021, Man Tang Hong (满糖红) sells hot and cold Chinese desserts at slightly more upmarket prices that start at S$3.60 for a red bean or green bean dessert.
Man Tang Hong's Chinese name, 满糖红, is a homonym of the Chinese phrase, 满堂红, that means all-round victory.
The shop incorporates in its name the Chinese word for "sugar" ("tang"), which alludes to their focus on desserts.
Cafe facade and interior
Seating capacity is limited in the cafe that boasts a cute Instagrammable corner with a pink statement wall and colourful cushions.
For those unable to get a seat or not up for waiting for one, takeaway and food delivery services via GrabFood are available.
Chinese desserts
On Aug. 4, Man Tang Hong launched a new dessert, Snow Swallow with Peach Gum, which is an elevated version of a warm Cheng Tng.
The new product came after the shop supposedly received requests for it.
It contains peach gum, a common ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese desserts, that is touted for its nutritional benefits but pleasing on the palatte owing to its chewy, jelly-like texture and delectable neutral taste.
Other traditional desserts available
The shop also serves popular dessert Orh Nee or Yam Paste.
Their hand-mashed yam paste is served with pumpkin pureé and coconut milk.
If you prefer chilled desserts, they also have cold cheng tng and snow fungus with Manuka honey.
According to Man Tang Hon's Instagram page, one of the must-try items, the snow fungus with Manuka honey, requires more than 15 hours to prepare so that its texture is soft.
Other chilled desserts include the rock melon and watermelon sago, and sea coconut with nata de coco.
