I tried Livinguard anti-odour t-shirts for a week & I didn’t smell like a sewer after working in this relentless heat

Anti-odour.

Working from home is a hot and steamy affair.

There I said it.

Before you accuse me of engaging in coitus during official office hours, hear me out; I’m really talking about the weather.

The weather during the past few months has been relentless, with the mercury peaking at 35°C during some days.

And if you account for the 90 per cent relative humidity, surely you can understand what I mean by hot and steamy. And sticky.

Oh, how I miss the (free) aircon.

Now on the topic of aircon, I, like many winter-deprived Singaporeans, do have air conditioners installed at home.

The fact of the matter is I’m a miser and I don’t wish for a heart attack when I check the utilities bill.

Sure, staying topless at home is another option but with that kind of frequency I’m attending virtual meetings (which honestly could be another email), staying topless is more hassle than convenience.

How I wish for something that can help me stay comfortable and sweat-free.

Enter Livinguard anti-odour t-shirts

So much for fulfilling my own wish.

When the proverbial arrow was fired at me to review anti-odour Livinguard t-shirts that are made using premium soft cotton (for excellent comfort) and feature virus and bacteria-destroying technology (for fresh smelling me), I welcomed the arrow with open arms and a bare torso.

Anti-odour? Really?

Anyway, does Livinguard ring a bell? Yes, it’s the same Swiss hygiene company who produced the free Livinguard masks that Temasek Foundation gave out in March this year.

I digress.

Here’s a blow-by-blow review of the t-shirts.

The colours

The t-shirts come in six colours (black, navy, grey, blue, red and white) for men and seven colours (+ pink) for the fairer sex.

I received the black, blue and white t-shirts.

IMHO, the colours available are great because they are the basic t-shirt colours, which means you can wear them on their own or throw in a jacket for a more layered look.

Having the logo on the right sleeve and not across the chest is great. Otherwise you will probably look like a Livinguard employee with a jacket.

The feels

Sometimes wearing a t-shirt in the equatorial heat can be uncomfortable, unsightly and unfortunate.

Uncomfortable because of the sweat which makes the t-shirt-wearing experience sticky, which often leads to unsightly sweat stains (especially for darker t-shirts) and ultimately you look rather unfortunate in that 32nd virtual meeting of the day and smell like the sewer when you go out to dabao lunch.

So I’m certainly happy to report that the Livinguard t-shirt is really quite comfortable (I totally can sleep wearing this but that would be a luxury).

Other than premium cotton, it also consists of modal -- a plant-based textile which helps the t-shirt keep its shape (yay for lazy people like me) -- and elastane (this gives the t-shirt its stretchability).

Put together, it feels soft to the touch and there’s some weight to it, so it does look pretty presentable.

The tech

Now, I’m a caveman in this department. To me, cotton is cotton and the only tech behind clothes are the machines that manufacture them.

So consider my mind blown when I learn that these t-shirts have it in them to kill viruses and bacterias, including those odour-causing bacteria to keep your shirts fresh and odour-free.

According to Livinguard, its patented Livinguard Technology safely and permanently destroys viruses and bacteria at the molecular level. It is stated on its website that “By empowering materials with a strong electric charge, we ensure they remain non-toxic, permanently protected and safe for the environment throughout their lifecycle.”

The amazing thing

What truly blows my mind is not how soft it is or how comfortable it is, but I actually don’t smell like a sewer after a full day working from home with no aircon on.

Yes, in that same hot, steamy and sticky weather.

Livinguard claims that its clothing doesn't need to be washed as often as conventional ones, saving water, energy and detergent.

Apparently, you don’t even need detergent: just rinse or wash with tap water.

This truly lives up to what Livinguard states on its website: “Officially hated by the detergent industry, save on laundry by buying this shirt.”

The details

If you are interested in staying fresh 24/7 in this sucky weather, do consider the t-shirts (or polo tees, 100 per cent cotton and made using the same technology).
