Human remains were found in the wheel well of a U.S. C-17 military plane that flew out of Kabul, after the Afghan capital fell to the Taliban's control.

U.S. Air Force is investigating

According to Reuters, the U.S. Air Force said that its office of Special Investigation is investigating the "loss of civilian lives".

The C-17 aircraft had landed in Kabul on Monday (Aug. 16), and was surrounded by many Afghan civilians.

The U.S. Air Force said, as reported by Reuters:

"Faced with a rapidly deteriorating security situation around the aircraft, the C-17 crew decided to depart the airfield as quickly as possible."

Videos of Afghans clinging onto the plane

On Aug. 16, a video circulated online showing a crowd running alongside the C-17 aircraft just before it took off.

Several people were seen clinging onto the plane's wings.

Another video captured tragic scenes of Afghans falling from the U.S. military plane, after it took off from Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport.

Other pictures and videos also circulated all around the world, depicting Kabul airport in chaos as Afghans attempted to flee the country.

One particularly disturbing video that emerged also claimed to show the lifeless body of one person still attached to plane as it was already airborne.
