Gerd Müller, the legendary German striker for Bayern Munich has passed away at the age of 75.
His death was announced via FC Bayern's official website.
Müller led his team to multiple championship titles, including the 1974 World Cup and four Bundesliga titles.
The number of goals he scored in his career cements his legendary status; He scored 566 goals in 607 competitive appearances for Bayern.
His total of 365 Bundesliga goals remains a record to this day.
His single-season record of 40 goals was only beaten earlier this year by current Bayern forward Robert Lewandowski.
In 1972, he hit 85 goals over 60 matches, something that was only broken 40 years later by Lionel Messi in 2012.
FC Bayern's president Herbert Hainer said that the club "wouldn't be the club we all love today without Gerd Müller".
"Gerd Müller was the greatest striker there’s ever been, and a fine person and character of world football."
Müller is survived by his wife and a daughter.
