Easy to sign up and good for the planet. What’s not to like?

If you’ve always wanted to do your part for the planet but find it hard to change your lifestyle, here’s a good chance to go green with minimal effort.

Electricity retailer Geneco has launched the Power Eco Add-on plan -- the first and only customisable green add-on to your electricity plan in Singapore.

Wait, what do you mean by “green”?

It means that with this plan you are effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Geneco offers two internationally-recognised instruments -- Carbon Credits (CCs) or Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) -- to offset or reduce carbon emissions.

One CC represents proof that one metric tonne of greenhouse gases (GHGs) reduced, avoided or removed from the atmosphere through verified offset projects such as forest conservation.

One REC represents proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity is generated from renewable sources -- the likes of solar, wind or hydro. The RECs offered by Geneco are traded through the Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables (TIGR) Registry.

You can choose either options with the Power Eco Add-on plan when you sign up or renew your Geneco electricity plan.

What are the real benefits to the environment?

According to a Singapore Power media release in 2020, the average annual electricity consumption of a four-room HDB household is equivalent to about 1,800kg of carbon emissions – requiring approximately 90 rain trees per household to absorb this impact on the environment.

So if you sign up for the Power Eco Add-on of 100 per cent plan (and considering the average four-room flat consumption of 400kWh on a 24-month plan), you can offset up to 3,920kg of carbon emissions. That is equivalent to the annual absorption by 192 rain trees.

What do you mean “customisable” and “add-on”?

You must be familiar with add-ons such as caller ID or a data booster when your mobile data is running out. The Power Eco Add-on plan works in the same vein: You can add this when you sign up to a new or renew your electricity plan with Geneco!

And the fact that you can choose the percentage of certified clean energy (choose from 25 to 100 per cent) means that it is highly customisable and is based on your comfort level.

Hmm. How can I be 100 per cent sure I’m (and the world) getting what I paid for?

You will receive an official Green Certificate for every calendar year of your contract. A digital certificate, of course.

How much more do I need to fork out for this add-on plan?

That depends on the percentage of certified clean energy you choose.

Assuming you consume 400kWh per month, it starts as low as 0.1cents/kWh or just 40cents more per month (based on the lowest which is 25 per cent of CCs)

It’s all quite within reach, if I may add.

Cool. How do I sign up?

Easy. -- just three simple steps:

Step 1: Choose an electricity plan (6/ 12/ 24 months)

Step 2: Select CCs OR RECs

Step 3: Choose your preferred level -- 25 per cent/ 50 per cent/ 75 per cent/ 100 per cent

Plus, sign up with Get It Fixed 24 plan to get a free Geneco Green Starter Kit worth $40.

The kit includes:

- Sprout Plantable Pencil

- Foldable and Recyclable Umbrella

- Collapsible Silicone Water Bottle

- Foldable Silicone Straw
