80-year-old temple founder Goh Kim Gek had a grand send-off at her funeral wake from her friends and family.
Goh, who is the founder of the Yu Feng Nan Fu Xuan Shan temple, passed away peacefully at home on August 15.
According to Shin Min Daily News, her grandson Lin revealed that there were at least 160 LED flower wreaths at her funeral wake.
An altruistic and hardworking person
Lin told Shin Min Daily News that Goh grew up in Malaysia and moved to Singapore when she got married, where she settled down and started a family.
Goh had four children, 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Lin described Goh to be a hardworking woman. In Malaysia, she tapped rubber sap for a living, she later became a bus ticket inspector in Singapore and had worked at a shipyard before.
Goh was a devout Taoist. When she was in her forties, Goh set up an altar at her house and invited devotees over for worship.
Goh was an altruistic person who had many friends.
Two years ago, Goh's kidneys started to deteriorate. Instead of dialysis, she preferred to treat her illness at home.
Her family prepared for the worst when she lost her appetite and had some internal haemorrhage sometime before her passing.
Many friends from multiple societies and religious organisations also visited pay their respects.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the scene at her funeral wake was dignified and solemn.
Lin said that Goh was a pillar of support for the family, and they will take her teachings to heart.
"When we were young, our grandma was the one who taught us how to be a good person. Her last wish was for the family to stay close-knitted, and to take good care of our 83-year-old grandfather," shared Lin.
