A significant pool of students from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) faced difficulty in securing an on-campus accommodation for the coming academic year.
After receiving emails notifying them about their failed applications at around 2am last night (July 1), many took to social media and reached out to the media to express their worries and frustration.
The main grievances include not being informed earlier that the accommodation slots have been greatly reduced, and being given limited time to find alternative housing and move out within the two-week window.
International students were particularly worried about the situation as most do not have permanent residences in Singapore.
The NTU Students' Union (NTUSU) stated in the morning of July 1 that they reached out to the university's management to seek clarifications on behalf of the student community.
In a poll participated by 760 students in a Telegram group called "NTU Homeless", more than 90 per cent of the affected students are either international students (48.4 per cent) or local students who take more than one hour to travel to NTU.
NTUSU: University will work out arrangements to help those who are most affected
In the evening of July 1, NTUSU provided an update on Instagram informing students that they are working with the university's senior management and Office of Campus Housing (OCH) to work out arrangements to help those affected the most.
These include the international students who are residing in the campus. These students do not have to vacate their rooms in the meanwhile.
The university will also be reaching out to international students who are staying in the campus in the next two days to address their concerns.
NTUSU also updated that the university aims to provide on-campus accommodations to as many students as possible. When the situation allows, the university will offer more places in the halls to students.
Mothership has reached out to NTU for comment, and will update accordingly.
