Following the loss against Palestine on June 4, the Singapore national football team suffered another defeat in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
On June 8 (Singapore time), the Lions lost 5-0 to Uzbekistan at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Singapore is ranked 159th in the FIFA World Rankings. Uzbekistan is 86th.
First half
The Lions conceded three goals in the first half, similar to their previous match against Palestine.
Just six minutes after kick-off, Uzbekistan's Jaloliddin Masharipov connected with Ikromjon Alibaev's overhead pass and volleyed the ball first-time past Singapore keeper Izwan Mahbud.
Masharipov netted his second goal in the 35th minute.
On the stroke of half time, Serie A striker Eldor Shomurodov scored Uzbekistan's third goal, giving his side a comfortable lead going into the second half.
Second half
Just five minutes after the break, captain Odil Akhmedov scored Uzbekistan's fourth goal after firing a shot into the near post, catching Singapore's Mahbud off guard.
Lions defender, Irfan Fandi, scored an own goal on the 88th minute.
Fourth in Group D
Singapore remains fourth in Group D of the FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
Their next match will be against Saudi Arabia on June 12 (Singapore time) in the final game of their qualifying campaign.
"Better than the previous match"
Speaking after the match, Singapore head coach Tatsuma Yoshida said that the Lions' performance was "better than the previous match".
He said that the team has proven that they "can do more".
However, Yoshida admitted that the team was not doing enough.
"It's also my management and strategy, and everything as a coach is not enough," he explained.
Yoshida added that he and the team will learn from this loss and will focus on their next match against Saudi Arabia.
