The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that from June 28, an import permit is required to bring power-assisted bicycles (PABs) and motorised personal mobility devices (PMDs) into Singapore.
In a Facebook post on June 28, LTA revealed that it hopes to improve path and fire safety for everyone by stemming the inflow of non-compliant devices.

As a result, PABs and PMDs such as electric scooters, electric skateboards, electric unicycles and hoverboards will be considered controlled goods.
Importers are required to ensure that devices meet maximum width, weight and device speed.
In addition, they need to ensure that PABs comply with the new EN15194:2017 standards which are applicable from July 1, 2021 and PMDs have UL2272 certification.

Offenders may be fined up to S$5,000 or jailed for up to six months, or both for the first offence.
On the other hand, repeat offenders may face higher penalties.

Fire safety
All sales of non-UL2272 PMDs in Singapore were banned in 2019.
As non-UL2272 certified PMDs pose a severe fire risk, the SCDF encourages owners of such PMDs to dispose of them at the designated points.
