Jollibee mascot survives 2-day Philippines shopping mall fire unscathed

The lone survivor to emerge after a two-day fire at the Gaisano Grand Mall of Antique in the Philippines is a Jollibee mascot, an unusual event that has been hailed as a miracle.

The anthropomorphic bee mascot of popular fast food chain, decked in its signature red blazer, stood resolute and ever joyful, against the smouldering backdrop of about PHP80 million (S$2.2 million) worth of property gone up in smoke.

"Jollibee is strong"

A photo of the hardy mascot was first posted on Facebook by Jo Olivz on June 18.

In the post, Olivz captioned the accompanying photo as, “Jollibee lang sakalam”, which translates to "Jollibee is strong", according to the Manila Bulletin.The Manila Bulletin reported that the fire had begun at the mall on Thursday, June 17, at about 5:30pm.

No injuries were reported as staff and customers had time to evacuate the two-storey shopping mall.

According to the Philippine News Agency, the fire was subsequently put out two days later, on Saturday at 12:15pm.

After the incident, many online commenters from the Philippines expressed pride and awe at Jollibee's "resilience" and ability to withstand the throes of flame.

Some memes were also spawned in honour of the feat.Olivz’s post has since garnered over 2,000 likes, and over 2,700 shares.
